The East Asia Rice Working Group (EARWG), a coalition of civil society organizations based in East Asia focusing on agriculture, trade and biodiversity issues wishes to invite you to the East Asia Rice Conference (EARC) on 22-24 November 2004 to be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The EARC is a farmers' conference wherein updates on the on going developments at the grassroots level on rice farming and critical developments on current rice policies and research trends will be shared together by the participants. This is a parallel NGO initiative to the World Rice Conference in Tokyo, Japan on 5-7 November 2004. EARWG member organizations, farmers groups and other interested participants are invited to attend.

The EARC aims to: 1) create awareness among civil society groups and farmer groups in the region on common issues surrounding rice and ways these are being addressed; 2) celebrate grassroots innovations; and 3) provide venue for discussions on policy initiatives particularly on rice trade issues.

The 3-day affair will be divided into major activities such as the Technofora, Panel discussions and the Rice Food Fair. During the Technofora, farmers and EARWG institutions will conduct hands-on sharing of technologies/ techniques used/ developed/ adapted by farmers. In the Panel Discussions, speakers will present their programs on a specified topic for the day relating to rice cultivation. The third day will focus on policy initiatives undertaken by participants particularly on global trade rules on rice and agriculture.   The Rice Food Fair is a celebration on the various Asian cuisines featuring rice based food, a seed exchange ritual and cultural presentations which includes the launching of the EARWG rice CD.
