East Asia Rice Conference 22-24

The East Asia Rice Working
Group (EARWG), a coalition of civil society organizations based in
East Asia focusing on agriculture, trade and biodiversity issues
wishes to invite you to the East Asia Rice Conference (EARC) on
22-24 November 2004 to be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The EARC is a farmers' conference wherein updates on the on going
developments at the grassroots level on rice farming and critical
developments on current rice policies and research trends will be
shared together by the participants. This is a parallel NGO
initiative to the World Rice Conference in Tokyo, Japan on 5-7
November 2004. EARWG member organizations, farmers groups and other
interested participants are invited to attend.
The EARC aims to: 1) create awareness among civil society groups and
farmer groups in the region on common issues surrounding rice and
ways these are being addressed; 2) celebrate grassroots innovations;
and 3) provide venue for discussions on policy initiatives
particularly on rice trade issues.
The 3-day affair will be divided into major activities such as the
Technofora, Panel discussions and the Rice Food Fair. During the
Technofora, farmers and EARWG institutions will conduct hands-on
sharing of technologies/ techniques used/ developed/ adapted by
farmers. In the Panel Discussions, speakers will present their
programs on a specified topic for the day relating to rice
cultivation. The third day will focus on policy initiatives
undertaken by participants particularly on global trade rules on
rice and agriculture. The Rice Food Fair is a celebration on the
various Asian cuisines featuring rice based food, a seed exchange
ritual and cultural presentations which includes the launching of
the EARWG rice CD.
